May You Succumb to the Danger of Growth.
– John O’Donohue
As the year ends, we often look back and take stock of what we have or have not accomplished. What items did we cross off the “to-do” list? What items got moved ahead to next year’s list? What items did we decide were unworthy of our attention and we threw them on the Samhain fire?
It may seem early to be talking of growth when we’re still caught up in the season of light, but I ask you to slow down for a moment and consider gifting yourself the “Danger of Growth”. Growth can take on any form you choose – you may be the one who opts to get out more or the one who stays quiet. You may choose the growth of exploring a new spiritual belief or simply being in nature with Spirit’s wondrous delights.
You may choose to grow through fun activities or deep studies, walking the Camino de Santiago, exploring the Amazon Rainforest, or the concrete jungle of New York. What you choose to Be, Do, or Have doesn’t really matter. It is answering the invitation that matters.
What makes your ego perceive Growth as Dangerous? Did you fall one too many times? Are you afraid you won’t get back up this time? Yet haven’t you always?
Think of a time in the past when you succumbed to the Danger of Growth. Was the payoff greater than the risk? Were you happy you did it?
One of my greatest Danger of Growth moments was traveling to Peru to work with Ayahuasquero and Maestro Huachumero healers. If I had listened to my friends and family I would have stopped in my tracks. This is just a sampling of what I heard: “Don’t you know there are poisonous snakes in the jungle?” “Seriously, you’re going to the jungle to take drugs?” “What about malaria?” “It’s a third-world country, you’ll die there!” “What the hell, are you crazy!” and from my partner at the time, “If you go, We. Are. Done.”
Yes, it was scary. But I knew, without a doubt, that I was meant to do this. I had always known, always, that I would work with Shamans. I won’t lie to you the first ceremony was brutal – I wanted to come home. I threw a hissy fit that would make a hangry two-year-old proud. Fortunately, Don Howard gently convinced me to stay, and I am so grateful! Beyond that initiation came the real growth. Once I purged the anger and rage, the insight and wisdom were able to break through. That choice changed my life!
I came home after those twenty-six days and changed my life completely over the next two years. The best choices of my life were made then, and I have built on that foundation to create happiness and fulfillment I could only imagine were possible.
You too have choices to make:
What do you want to be?
What do you want to do?
What do you want to have?
What do you want to be?
Are you in the health industry but have you always wanted to go to NYC and try your skill on Wall Street? You want to be a shark, make big money, and live in a fancy penthouse in the city that never sleeps! What stops you? Write down the reasons you can’t, and then write down the Truth – which is YOU CAN. Write down all the ways that it is possible. Anything is possible, if you are willing to risk, be creative, work hard (yeah, they always leave this step out), risk some more, create some more, and work harder. Once upon a time, I majored in nursing, then that class came when I found out we had to give shots. Shots? Shots involve needles! I HATE needles! I can’t even look at a syringe without panicking. My nursing career was over. Fortunately, many years later I discovered alternative healing – Shamanic Reiki and Spiritual Life coaching. I can now use my gifts – no needles necessary! How can you BE all you want to be?
What do you want to do?
Do you want to sing on The Voice, fly planes, learn Reiki, meditate longer and more often, hike the Grand Canyon, build your own website, paint or write or sculpt, stay home and nest…what do you REALLY want to do? Make a list of at least 25 things you want to do. Choose the top 13. Get to work on making them happen. I would suggest that you choose activities that challenge you to stretch and grow.
I am never going to bungee jump (that thing could break) but I have walked on fire, parasailed, and slept in a remote cave for three nights alone with just water and a few blankets. There may be some limitations to what you can do, if you don’t have a spectacular voice, you may not get chosen to sing on The Voice, but you may be able to share the gift of singing in other ways. There is only one significant difference between those who do and those who don’t do what they want – Belief. We don’t have to convince Spirit that we can do it, we have to convince our tiny little Ego that we can Do It!
What do you want to have?
Do you want fancy cars, multiple homes, and luxurious vacations? Or are you more the cabin in the woods, hiking and meditating, working enough to buy the seeds for your small garden, type of person? Are there specific items you want to have like those stated above or do you seek qualities in your life like joy, peace, creativity, and security? Again, take the time to list out what you want to have this coming year.
When working with qualities I love to do this exercise. First list the top seven qualities that are most important to you. Next, reduce the list to the top six. Then the top five and so on, until you get to your top One quality. You may find that the list changes as you winnow down. For instance, you might have your top three as Love, Peace, and Happiness. Then when you get to Two you realize you forgot Creativity. Now you realize you have to add Creativity, but what will you eliminate? See how that works? My final work surprised me, but then again it didn’t. As it morphed and changed, when I finally got there–and it didn’t take long–I knew it was the perfect word.
What’s my word you ask? FREEDOM
What better gift to give yourself than to…
If not now, when?
Love and Light,
In all these categories, when you make your lists challenge yourself to stretch and grow. Your lists should inspire, excite and be just this side of dangerous!
If your Choices don’t Light you up, I would love to help you Create that Fire!

And if you prefer to read it here’s the text:
I climbed Thorny Butte today! “Why does that deserve an exclamation mark?”, you might ask. Because, I’ve tried to climb it before and found it an almost impermeable forest of cacti and underbrush, hence the name I gave it, Thorny Butte. Yet I know that amongst the cacti are beautiful flowers, some orangey ones sprouting from the prickliest prickly pear, tiny purple and yellow ones growing right up between the spines and tall pale pink tubular flowers under a scrubby tree. The flowers found their way, so could I.
Today I approached from the right side off an old jeep trail. There it was, a path I hadn’t noticed before, someone had gone before me cutting a path through the rock and brush. It didn’t always look like I expected it to look…there were times today when my path cut through undergrowth and over rocks, but it was still there.
There were times I thought I had lost it, but then it would appear, faintly pointing the direction I needed to go. I often questioned if I should follow the path, I was alone and it was steep, but I asked my guides, I listened and knew that I was safe. I trusted my inner guidance to lead me in the right direction as much as I trusted the path.
The last five feet were impenetrable, I couldn’t actually get to the top without forcing my way and I didn’t have the proper tools to make it. The view was still breathtaking even five feet from the top, I couldn’t see 360 degrees but sometimes 240 is enough!
- Don’t give up, keep looking for your path, it may be around the next bend.
- It’s okay to follow in another’s footsteps if you can’t find the way.
- Don’t forget what goes up has to come down, save some energy for the descent.
- Trust your inner GPS.
- Be grateful for those who came before!

When I was first working with Mamacita, my spirit guide, she told me to purchase a Silver Bullet travel trailer and go travel around the country. I was stunned and confused at this advice because I don’t particularly like to travel…at least not that kind of travel. I prefer to go somewhere and stay put for two weeks, get to know the locals, walk everywhere and relax. The thought of traveling around, a day here, a couple of days there, sounded like my version of hell.
After a few days of angst I finally said “NO”. I then asked Mamacita what on earth she was thinking and why she would tell me to do something that was so revolting to me. Mamacita in her infinite wisdom told me that she wanted me to learn how to say NO. That it didn’t matter who told me to do something, Jesus, Buddha, the angels or her, if it wasn’t right for me I could say NO! This was huge for me, and I knew that if she had just told me I could do this it wouldn’t have had the same impact. I needed to go through that trial to really assimilate the lesson.
When you’re hearing the wisdom of your Spirit Guides it is:
- It resonates with your Truth
- It speaks to your heart instead of your ego
- It may challenge you
- It feels right
- And you can say NO if it doesn’t fit for you
If the guidance does not fit these parameters ask again. Check with your guides that you are hearing correctly, sit with them and take the time to understand. If you do not get an answer when you ask, that is an answer. No answer means you need to reflect more and maybe ask again in a few days. Or possibly you aren’t supposed to do anything right now.
Remember to surrender, let go and get out of your own way. The answer will come. Ask yourself, “Is this forced?”. If it feels forced at all take a step back and check again. It’s okay to wait for the truth.
Apparently I didn’t completely learn the lesson because about two years ago I got a message to give one of my rings to a client. A ring I really loved! After some back and forth I gave her the ring but never felt right about it. I was angry and frustrated when I came home and then I realized that an entity I had removed from a client earlier that day had attached to me. It was this nasty entity that told me to give the ring to my client. How did I finally know that? The decision wasn’t right for me, I felt bad and I was mad as hell that I had done this stupid thing. If I had followed my Truth I would never have allowed that nasty entity to influence me like that. I could have said NO and sent the ring later if I was still getting this guidance. Believe me I definitely learned the lesson of saying NO, that fateful day!
Clearing the entity is another story for another day, just please understand that you can always say NO, even to your guides (especially to a nasty entity posing as your guide). Follow your Truth!

When I was first working with Mamacita she told me one day that I should get a silver travel trailer and travel around the country. I actually contemplated this for a couple of weeks…what the heck could she be thinking? I don’t even particularly like to travel, at least not that kind of travel. I like to immerse myself in a community, get to know the people, walk the streets, explore, eat local food, stay in one place for a couple of weeks. But travel around from place to place with not only myself but a large dog and cat in a silver bullet? I just wasn’t seeing this possibility.
I relayed this story to another psychic, her reply was, “oh Mamacita is a trickster!” “A trickster?”, I asked. “Why would Mamacita play tricks on me?” I was absolutely shocked that Mamacita would do this to me. My spirit guide would try to trick me. What?? I didn’t understand how she could do that. Couldn’t I trust her above all? What I later realized through counseling with Mamacita was that she wanted me to learn how to discern what MY truth was, no matter who told me to do something. She taught me to discern between my hearts true desire and someone else’s agenda. She taught me to discern between what fit’s my vision and when my ego needed to be stroked or inflated.
This would serve me well in later years when I was asked to work with a client who clearly needed a therapist, not a coach. My ego self was just sure I could help – that I could “save” this woman. Number one rule in my business – I don’t “save” anyone. Spirit works through me to guide people to their own answers, with questions and sometimes wise suggestions. But it’s not me – it’s my higher self – connecting with their higher self. As soon as I fall into the savior trap I know I’m in ego and it’s time to back away! This then was another clear indication of a trickster moment, only this time the trickster was my ego. Another test, thankfully I passed.
Where or when in your life do you get fooled by your ego self? When do you feel challenged to stand in your Truth?
Often when I make a decision coming from ego, it is fraught with fear…fear is the root cause, and consequently it will usually end badly one way or another. Recently I allowed a woman who called late morning on a Sunday to make an appointment for that afternoon because she was only in town for the day from Phoenix. This clearly does not fit my vision as I have chosen NOT to work on Sundays. Instead of asking the proper questions my ego asked, What if she decides to become a coaching client and wants to work with me long term? Wouldn’t it behoove me to work with her just this one Sunday? So I rearranged my day, sent my husband away, put the animals in their respective rooms and waited for the client. Ten minutes before she was scheduled to show up the phone rang, she was canceling!
When I disrespect myself and my vision, I attract people who disrespect me. This decision clearly came from fear, I’m building a new business, therefore sometimes I think I must do anything and everything to make that happen, even when it goes against my truth/my vision. It may seem like a small waver to work on a Sunday and sometimes it is justifiable if I’m working with a client who respects me and my time. But I knew almost immediately that this wasn’t going to happen. Everything about it felt forced!
Here are some questions to ask yourself when you are trying to make a decision:
- Does this serve my higher purpose?
- Does this fit my vision? (if you don’t have a vision, that may be the first step)
- Am I coming from heart or from ego?
- Will this bring me joy? Peace? Satisfaction?
- Does it serve the community, my clients, the world?
- Am I forcing it?
Mamacita would tell you to go within and ask – that you and only you have the answer. Trust your inner knowing. If your decision doesn’t “feel” right, if you feel like you’re forcing it, then you probably need to step back. Stop, take a look at your answers above and really check in with your heart self to find the truth.
Your true answer is found within!
